Molecular visualization initiative

The Goal

The ability to visualize single molecules in live cells has transformed our understanding of how biomolecules interact with each other and the cellular environment. Until recently, the microscopy technology that enables these measurements has been finicky, low-throughput, and accessible only to a handful of specialized labs worldwide.

We're changing that. We're building high-throughput single-molecule microscopes—hardware, software, and firmware, all open source—and distributing them to research labs free of charge. By democratizing this transformative technology, we hope to catalyze progress in biological and biomedical research, which will increasingly depend on high-resolution information in live cells.

The Plan

We're developing a plug-and-play oblique line-scan (OLS) illumination module that attaches to standard Nikon Ti-2 microscopes, along with integrated software for automated image acquisition and analysis. In the first phase, we'll distribute systems to labs with single-molecule imaging experience who can stress-test the platform and provide feedback. In the second phase, we'll expand to labs new to the field—making single-molecule imaging a routine tool for molecular and cell biology.

We're looking for optical and software engineers who want to build tools that will reshape how biologists see the living cell. If you're excited about open-source instrumentation, high-performance imaging, or real-time data pipelines—and want your work in the hands of researchers worldwide—we'd love to hear from you.
